Residential Dog Obedience Training @ The Dog Adventure Centre
We have developed a comprehensive training program that will push your dog to achieving their best. Your dog will work and live with us to improve their overall obedience to an acceptable standard as well as focusing on key areas of socialisation and control.
How does it work?
First we will fill in a comprehensive behavioural and health questionnaire so we have as much accurate information as possible. This will include information on specific problems, nutrition, exercise, and any health related issues.
After we complete the intitial paperwork we will set a suitable date for your dog to come and stay. Some owners try to coincide this with a family holiday therefore saving themselves a bit of money by combining boarding and training together.
What will my dog learn?
We have a set syllabus to teach your dog which is outlined below. However, each dogs learning ability will be slightly different so if the dog is showing particular promise we will increase the level of training to match the dogs willingness to learn. The main focus will be on teaching a set command structure and working on improving your dogs relationship with the home and the outside world. This will include socialisation and safe, positive control techniques.
The Training that can be taught:
- Sit
- Down
- Leave
- Stay
- Look At Me
- Walk to Heel
- Recall from Distance
- Positive Socialisation
- Environmental Conditioning (Getting dogs used to lots of different places)
What Training Methods are involved?
We only use positive and safe training techniques that primarily center around clicker training. We look to see what motivates the dog and use that as a start to the training ideally teaching the dog that the focus should be on us as their handler. Our techniques are tried and tested and we will NEVER use choke chains, electric collars or anything that will physically or mentally hurt your dog.
What Happens Day to Day?
Each dog is different in the way they learn but our primary focus will be on motivating your dog to want to pay attention to us. This could mean that we are out for very short periods of time with the dog focusing on quick commands or that we will be out all day with the dog improving their ability to learn in new environments.
Dont forget that our Residential Dog Training is in our own home. Not in kennels!
A standard guide
to a dogs day:
6am Get Up and Out for the first walk
7am Fed
8am Obedience Commands
9am Rest
12pm Socialisation and Habituation
3pm Rest
5pm Walk to Heel and Recall Training
7pm Fed
9pm Last walk of the day
As you can see the day will be an action packed one with the dog constantly having things to do. However, please note that each dogs physical abilities will vary so the day will be adapted to suit the dogs individual needs.
Can my dog enrole?
We accept any dog from 12 weeks of age. They must have valid insurance and be fully innoculated and treated for worms and fleas. Remember that your dog will be living in our home NOT in a kennel.
Dog Demonstration
Arranged for the end of the course. This is scheduled time made by both the trainer and owner to meet and demonstrate the dogs skills in a live environment. This means we will be out and about possibly with some of the staff coming across all types of scenarios.
Owner Tuition
At the end of the first week we invite the owner along to take part in a 1 Hour scheduled training exercise to demonstrate how far along the dog has come. This 1 hour will be broken up into small command tasks followed by a talk by the trainer to the owner to explain what has been done so far.
Throughout the course the trainer will contact the owner directly to let them know how the dog is getting on. They may ask for additional information or they may just tell you that the dog is progressing exactly as planned.
During the demonstration at the end of the course the traininer will instruct the owner on ALL aspects of the training involved detailing exactly what has occured and instructing the owner how to handle their dog and what to do in certain scenarios.
At the end of the course the owner is offered 3 FREE 1-2-1 follow up sessions to allow the trainer to adequately explain the principles behind the work with the dog. These can be taken at any time but most owners arrange weekly meetings once the dog is home.
What happens after?
The choice is the owners. We will recommend if further training is needed but more than likely it will just be a few niggling things that need ironing out. Further sessions can be booked for a reduced 1-2-1 fee. Normally after a Residential Training Course we will offer the owner the option to attend our social activity training groups which are relaxed and informal ways of keeping on top of the training.
